Information about Lesvos and suggested activities

Welcome to Lesvos, a majestic UNESCO Geopark with volcanic structures, wetlands and thermal springs, with its over 20-million-year-old Petrified Forest in Sigri and its more than 11 million olive trees. Lesvos is the land where Aristotle once roamed, studying its unique flora and fauna and founded Biology and Scientific Methodology, and today is a paradise for bird watchers, with more than 250 species of birds recorded in the salt pans of Kalloni Bay, otherwise known as “Aristotle’s Lagoon”.

With an impressive coastline that stretches for almost 370 km, Sea & sun lovers will discover that Lesvos offers countless options for relaxing by the sea for everyone, from rocky, pebble, or sandy beaches, either organized and lined with cafes, bars and taverns, to remote and unspoilt locations, where you can be “one” with nature. And for the more adventurous, don’t miss spending a day scuba diving, doing water sports or sailing!

Lesvos will definitely win your heart through its amazing cuisine and local products such as the renowned sardines (papalina) from the Gulf of Kalloni, delicious cheese varieties and yoghurt, it golden olive oil, famous ouzo, and homemade dishes made with the freshest of ingredients. See how ouzo is produced at the facilities of Ouzo Varvagiannis and the Ouzo Isidoros Arvanitis Museum in Plomari, and learn about the history of olive picking and olive oil production at the Lesvos Museum of Industrial Olive Oil in Agia Paraskevi!

Lesvos is an ideal religious “must” destination for people searching to experience the spiritual, cultural and historical wealth this destination has to offer you through its traditions, art, marble sculptures, wood carvings, mosaics, hagiography and museography. All give testimony to Lesvos’ rich religious heritage. And if you are planning your wedding, a christening or any special day, Lesvos is the ideal destination, providing enchanting sites and services from professional wedding planners specializing in organizing events.

In Lesvos, the Arts, literature and culture have had a prominent place in the lives of people since the beginning of time. From antiquity to modern times, Lesvos is the birthplace of a large number of poets, musicians, historians and philosophers, distinguished in their time and famous even today. Born and bred here in antiquity were the epic poet Lesches, the archaic poets Arion, Terpander and Alcaeus, one of the Seven Sages of antiquity, Pittacus, the pupil and heir of the important philosopher and founder of botany Aristotle, Theophrastus of Eressos, the author of the first novel in the world “Daphnis and Chloe”, Longus, and many others… And of course, among them, the one hailed as the tenth Muse, unrivalled Sappho. As a result, Lesvos, and particularly Skala Eresos, is a popular LGBTQ+ destination, especially for women. In fact, in September, the International Women’s Festival takes place in Eresos for 2 weeks, with a rich program of artistic and cultural events.

This piece of earth, as the Nobel prize winner Odysseas Elytis wrote, is divine. It is where the sun shines all seasons. It is where you will “live” every moment to its fullest through genuine experiences, traditional & pure flavors, and the warm hospitality of the locals. This is how amazing this piece of earth is…
