Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum is located in the center of the port, on the coastal road, very close to the ship’s approach point. It is a true jewel of the island, founded in 1965, to house ship models, half-models, paintings, nautical instruments, documents and books, all related to the maritime tradition of Oinousses. Through the excellently designed spaces, the visitor has the opportunity to travel to the times when the Inoussio sailing ships plowed the Black Sea and the Mediterranean and their worthy captains prospered in trade and shipping. It has attracted thousands of visitors from Greece and abroad to date. Its rare exhibits, its many and important paintings testify to the phases of the commercial shipping of Oinousses. From the steam-powered sailing ships, the sacrifices in the naval arena, the post-war transition to the liberties, which CLASSIFIED the Aignoussians in the international maritime world, up to today’s large fleets. A remarkable and rare collection, unique in Greece, consisting of elaborate ship models.

Seamanship Square with the monument of the Invisible Sailor

At the most important monuments of Oinousses, the visitor meets at the entrance of the port a bronze mermaid with a crown and a sailing ship in her left hand. It is the emblematic bronze sculpture, by the sculptor Maria Papakonstantinou, that welcomes the visitors of the island.

At the entrance of the port you are greeted by the statue of the Oinoussia mother, who guides her children with her handkerchief when they leave for their long journeys.

Walking from the wharf to the square of Seamanship, the monument to the Unknown Sailor stands, which is the first statue in Greece dedicated to the lost sailors. It has the names of all the Oinoussian sailors who perished at sea written all around it.

The monument of the anonymous Aignousiotis. The monument sailor with a stern face. As he gazes at the oncoming seas, he stands upright at his helm. Underneath are written the lyrics “Nothing, Lords, does not speak, only the ship”. The lyrics are by Alexandros Pallis and refer to Kanaris. It is nice that these verses were put, as an exhortation, by the people of Oinousses on their statue. For the children of the island to read them, to see the sailor and to know that there in the sea is their preeminence and glory.

Saint Nicholas

Deeply pious, the Aignousiotes worship with deep faith the island’s patron saint, the protector of the sea, Agios Nikolaos. Its majestic cathedral dominates the center of the settlement and sends its blessing to all sailors and strangers. In the ornate, richly decorated with excellent hagiographies and thousands of sailors’ offerings, a piece of the Holy Relic of the Saint is kept, which was officially transferred from Sicily in December 2001. Saints, each of which is honored with its own chapel. On the fifteenth of August, the religious custom of the burial of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with splendor and reverence.

Monastery of the Annunciation

The monastery was inaugurated on August 10, 1965. It is built with Byzantine architecture and contains frescoes by famous icon painters. The monastery follows the Julian calendar. The Holy Monastery “Evangelismos tis Theotokou” is a treasure of the Panagos family and Katingkos Patera to the Virgin Mary. An architectural masterpiece on the west coast of the island, it gives the visitor the feeling of approaching an area of Athos. A sanctuary and spiritual refuge, it calms the soul of the pilgrim, who is looking for an atmosphere of contemplation. Excellent hagiographies by Fotis Kontoglou and many relics and articles of worship make up the decoration of the catholicon, while in the manor house the welcoming treat from the production of the monastery leaves a sweet memory of the visit.
